What happens to a dream deferred?

Harlem by Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
nd then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

What happens when you have a whole population being told to let go of their dreams? In Kuwait people are often told that their dreams are not good enough, that they should aspire for something better. It’s even worse when parents convince their children to put their dreams on hold and focus on the real world. How important are dreams? Am I just too idealistic?

Have you realized any of your dreams? I would love to hear about it!

Make me smile, please.

  1. I’m not even sure what the “real world” is. This world is whatever we make it and whenever someone tells you to live in the “real world,” its a sure sign their own dreams were deferred a long time ago to make way for someone else to dictate the terms of their own dream instead. In posting this it’s clear you’ve got your eyes open to all of those around us that are following the plans of others- keep dreaming and always aim for the moon. Even if you miss you’ll end up with the stars. Great post, keep them coming!

    • Hi, thank you for stopping by. I agree, our world is what we make it but often times we get trapped in somebody else’s dream that we forget it’s not what we want.

      I will! Thanks again.
